“It’s so important to read widely.” Over the years, the world’s most prominent writers have shared their advice to aspiring writers with us. Meet Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ocean Vuong and six other significant writers in this compilation. “You cannot become a general if you’re not a corporal, surgeon, or lieutenant before. So go step by step,” says the late Umberto Eco in his advice from 2015. Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie emphasises the importance of reading. American writer Lorrie Moore says, "Be free, but don’t be casual. Be free, be deep.” Ocean Vuong shares the perspective of being a young, queer writer himself: “I wanted to know all the rules because the rules are like the guardrails on the highway. And I think for so many queer folks, after a while, you realise that this road was never made with me in mind.” Colm Tóibín, Claire-Louise Bennett, Mario Vargas Llosa and Jonathan Franzen also appear in the video with their thoughts on writing.
