The backing, qualifier, and rebuttal are technically optional. Those optional components respectively provide additional support, limitations, and acknowledgement of counterargumentation. However, when using Toulmin argumentation for social justice advocacy in the context of English composition, more is more. Therefore, consider all six components of Toulmin argumentation as required. While people have interpreted the organization of Toulmin argumentation components in different ways, this module will organize the components in a fashion that aligns with a social justice context.
