One persuasive writing technique that involves engaging emotions is known as pathos. A trick you can use to remember that pathos involves emotions is to think about other emotion related words that contain the root syllabus “path.” For instance, empathy and sympathy both have “path” in them.
Besides simply remembering that pathos relates to emotions, let us consider personalizing the definition. Have you ever read something that emotionally moved you? Have you ever read something and thought that the author put a lot of heart into what they wrote? If so, you experienced the pathos of their writing.
In the context of social justice research writing, pathos helps readers care about topics. On top of that, pathos helps readers personalize a topic even if it initially seemed unrelatable. In terms of social justice calls-to-action in research writing, pathos can inspire empathy and action in support of the people central to the social justice issue. With all of the above information in mind, let us define pathos in the social justice research writing context as a persuasive writing technique that appeals to emotions to make a social justice issue valued, relatable, and actionable.
