SLO-Conduct inquiry-based research by formulating research questions, identifying a variety of sources (e.g., utilizing internet and library resources, such as scholarly sources), and evaluating and integrating sources into writing, including using sources as evidence in researched arguments.
Activity: Short Writing Assignment
Look at the questions on your list. Now, it is time to narrow your lists down to Plan A and Plan B. During the research process, there may be times where you have to switch gears, so having a Plan B is essential. It is better to have and not need it, then need it and not have it.
- Do you have more than 10 questions in any of your lists? The topic you choose for research should be one in which you have plenty of questions.
- Do any of your questions help narrow the topic or create new key words or phrases? Begin to highlight questions that may create subtopics.
- Using your questions, what type of information comes up from browsing through general search engine, library database results, or documentaries? You don't have to record or keep any sources now, but you want to look around just to see what is out there.
Talk it over with a friend: maybe over coffee or tea! Maybe your topic could be about societal trends and coffee in the City of Chicago. How do coffee houses create communities? Either way, it is important to find something that is sustainable and not overwhelming. Make sure you have a topic for Plan A and a topic for Plan B.
You will spend the rest of the semester with your topic, so make sure you use this activity to help you pick. If you couldn't think of any questions about your topic, then you shouldn't choose it. This activity should facilitate creating a research question later.
