Genres aren’t just a way to categorize music, movies, or videogames. There are also a variety of writing genres. You’re most likely already familiar with some writing genres within fiction books like young adult, science fiction, and fantasy. However, did you know that there are also many writing genres that you’ll encounter within a college setting? This holds true for the types of texts that you’ll be assigned to read, the texts you’ll encounter when researching for your own writing, and the types of essays you may be assigned throughout your college career. Understanding academic writing genres is important so that you get the most out of your active reading and that you know what type of writing conventions to follow in your own essays.
