Self-reflection and knowing your strengths and weaknesses are crucial parts of excelling in college. Your self-awareness can not only help you create study schedules that actually meet your needs, but it can also tell you when it’s time to try a new technique or reach out for help.
The critical reading strategies described in this chapter are ultimately just suggestions. While you will have to show evidence of annotation, and your critical understanding of the texts presented in this course is a key to your success, the ways you go about these tasks are up to you.
Write a paragraph considering the reading skills and strategies you’ve used in the past and your plan for the future. What has worked well for you? What hasn’t worked well for you? How do you feel about reading in general, and how do you feel about reading for this class in particular? What are your thoughts about the techniques presented in this chapter? What techniques do you see yourself actually using for the required reading in this course? Be honest—it’s safe to express your disdain and/or your perceived shortcomings here. Finally, include some tips on critical reading that you would recommend to a classmate. You will not have to share any other part of this writing assignment but be ready to share your suggestion(s) during class discussion.
