There are two parts to this activity. Part 1: In small groups identify what type of claim the statements below are. Your choices are:

1. The death penalty doesn’t lower crime. 2. Capital punishment is inhumane, and we shouldn’t get to decide who gets the death penalty. 3. Considering how many inmates on death row become acquitted of their charges, the federal government should ban states from using capital punishment. 4. The gap in college degree completion between Latinos and their White peers is wider than it’s been before. 5. The school district should implement a bilingual education program to assist the recent migrant families that have arrived in the town. 6. Public universities provide the same education that private colleges do but with lower tuition costs. 7. Unlike Facebook, TikTok provides a better platform for disability activists. 8. Unless countries control their carbon emissions, global temperatures will continue to rise. 9. With the rise of AI writing tools, schools should revisit their plagiarism protocol to keep up with how to discipline students who use ChatGPT and other similar AI. 10. Diabetes has increased in the town of San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, México where Coca-Cola controls a majority of the water use in the region and we should demand for more public protection of water. |
