The short story “Desiree’s Baby,” on its surface (at least initially) is a romantic story set in Louisiana that quickly becomes a tragedy as it is slowly revealed that the baby (and possibly Desiree herself) come from Black ancestry. Hidden beneath its gentile language and romantic narrative is an ugliness about identity and gender that lead to a horrific end for Desiree and her child.
Spend about 15 minutes writing down your answer to one of the following questions:
1. How does Desiree’s position as a woman and mother of the child impact other characters’ perceptions of her “responsibility” for the baby’s (perceived) racial identity?
2. How does the end of the story change our perspective about it?
3. What do you think happened to Desiree and the baby at the end? How does this mirror (or not mirror) the way Desiree was initially discovered and adopted?
4. How is racial identity discussed within the text?
Each response should include at least one quote to provide evidence for your claim. In small groups, discuss your answers. We will come together as a large group to discuss our answers
