For your second essay, you will summarize, analyze, and respond to a text. You may choose from the following:
· “Sixty-Nine Cents”
· “One or Two Things I know for Sure”
· “Meanings of a Word”
· “My Name”
· “Complaint of the Rio Grande”
· “Asian Americana”
SUMMARY:
The first part of the paper should provide basic information about the text, including the author's name and the title. From there, you need to convey in your own words the main point of the piece. Remember to use a strong and appropriate verb to describe WHAT the author is trying to do with the essay. Are they “arguing,” “responding,” or merely “stating”? You can use phrases such as “Smith notes/argues/states,” “According to Smith” and “for Smith, the solution appears to be.” This will help you designate intellectual property. Please do not rely on direct quotes when summarizing. A summary should be your accurate representation of the main ideas conveyed by the author in the essay. Use your own words. This portion of the assignment should focus on the author’s thoughts and purpose. At the end of the summary, please write your thesis. In a rhetorical analysis, your thesis is whether or not you think that the author did a good job or not of supporting their points or conveying their message and how; not whether you like the text or not. (1-2 paragraphs)
ANALYSIS:
The second part of the paper should be your analysis of the author’s support for the claim. In this part of the paper, you are showing your understanding of HOW the author supports the claim being made. It answers questions like: How does the author use rhetorical strategies to support their points? Remember Ethos, Logos, and Pathos? What specific types of evidence are used; for instance, examples, statistics, or logical reasoning (logos)? Is emotion (pathos) used? If so, how is it used and is it effective? You can also analyze word choice and sentence structure to determine tone. Does the writer use figurative language and to what end? How does the author establish authority and credibility (ethos)? Cite specific examples from the text using direct quotes and paraphrases. This portion of the assignment should focus on your analysis of the author’s effectiveness in achieving his or her purpose for writing. (2-3 paragraphs)
RESPONSE:
The last part of the paper should be your response to the essay, or your reaction to what you have read. Do you agree or disagree with the points raised by the author and why? Here, you can also discuss the relevance or timeliness of the essay (kairos). This part of the essay allows you to relate your thoughts and experiences with the text. You may bring up other texts: articles, films, and popular media you have encountered or researched to relate with the ideas presented in the essay. This portion of the assignment should focus on your thoughts and feelings. (2-3 paragraphs)

· You must have a tutor help you with this essay for an additional 25 points towards ENG 097.
· You must integrate quotes from the essay.
· You must have a Works Cited page.
· You must write your rough draft in class for feedback and peer review.
