Drill music is defined as the theme music to murder, and despite this genre spreading around the world, Chicago is its birthplace. Unfortunately, Chicago is one of the most violent cities in the United States, and drill music not only tells the stories of these "beefs" it often inflames the tension between rivals. Drill music and its propensity to inflame street violence, has spread far beyond Chicago. Cities around the country and even abroad have been witnessing large numbers of drill artists and shootings, stabbings, and murders associated with the music.
This module will:
- Define drill music
- Discuss drill music's history and impact on hip hop culture overall
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Recall the history of Chicago Drill Music.
- Identify the connection between Chicago Drill Music and hip hop overall.
- 15.1: Drill Music - Readings and Media
- This page discusses drill music, a hip hop subgenre from South Side Chicago that emerged in the early 2010s, characterized by themes of violence, street life, and minimalistic production influenced by trap music. Popularized by Chief Keef's "I Don’t Like," drill highlights social issues like poverty and inequality, leading to its international variations, especially in the UK and Brooklyn.
- 15.2: Drill Music - Classroom Activity
- This page presents a classroom activity revolving around the documentary "Welcome to Chiraq," highlighting drill music in Chicago and its key figure, Chief Keef. It emphasizes the influence of the artists' environments on their music and encourages discussions on drill music's uniqueness. Students will collaborate in groups to explore these themes through guided questions following the documentary viewing.
- 15.3: Drill Music - Assignment
- This page examines Chief Keef's influence on drill music, noting the genre's authenticity and the youth of its artists. It addresses the raw and violent imagery in drill lyrics and videos that mirror real-life experiences. Readers are encouraged to critically reflect on their views of these videos, the interplay between art and life, and the perceptions of young artists as either perpetrators or victims of their situations.
