This module's focus is on how capitalism impacts hip hop culture. Capitalism, defined as "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state." As you'll see in the video titled "How Capitalism Ruins Hip Hop." Specifically, the argument here is that hip hop has become "watered down" to appeal to mainstream society for financial gain. In the process, many would say that hip hop has "lost its soul" and "sold out" to corporate interests. Therefore, individuals that aren't part of the culture are the main beneficiaries of its popularity.
