While cocaine has been popular in the western world for centuries, crack-cocaine (a derivative of cocaine) rose to popularity in the mid 1980s. Primarily, much like hip hop culture, crack-cocaine became most impactful and concentrated in urban Black communities during this time period. Crack-cocaine influenced politics, media, music, societal perception, and community economics in substantial ways. Each of these influential realities directly impacted hip hop generationers and hip hop culture overall during its most formative years. These impacts are still being felt today in the hip hop and larger community.
This module will:
- Examine the relationship between crack-cocaine, politics, the legal system, and hip hop culture
- Highlight examples of crack-cocaine's influence on hip hop culture
Upon Completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Identify the connection between the crack-cocaine epidemic and hip hop culture overall
- Identify the relationship between crack-cocaine and the United States justice system
- Recall how hip hop artists describe their personal interactions with crack-cocaine
- 9.1: Hip Hop and the Crack Era - Readings and Media
- This page examines the influence of the crack cocaine epidemic on hip hop culture and inner-city communities between 1985 and 1995, emphasizing its role in fostering violence, generational conflicts, and mass incarceration. Key artists, including Jay Z and N.W.A, reflected these struggles in their music with anti-authoritarian themes.
- 9.2: Hip Hop and the Crack Era - Classroom Activity
- This page examines the interplay between the Iran-Contra affair and the 1980s crack cocaine epidemic, detailing how illegal arms sales to fund Nicaraguan Contras intertwined with drug trafficking that fueled urban violence and the rise of crack in black communities.
- 9.3: Hip Hop and the Crack Era - Assignment
- This page discusses the assignment based on the documentary "Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation," which explores the effects of crack cocaine on hip hop and Black culture, narrated by Ice-T and featuring artists such as Snoop Dogg. Students must write a 500-word response paper analyzing this impact, adhering to specific formatting guidelines (12-point Times New Roman, double spaced) and using a provided grading rubric.
