This module's focus is on African Americans' struggle to be educated in the harsh racial climate of Jim Crow America. While the struggle itself is worthy of deep analysis and discussion, what was being fought for, education and its value, must also be appreciated and explored thoroughly.
Place students into groups of two. Each student should interview their partner about their own educational history. Questions to guide their interview could be: "How would you describe your elementary school years in school?" "Do you feel you had a positive educational experience?" "How did your school impact who you are today?" "Why are you pursuing an education in college now?" "What was your parents educational background?"
Once interviews are complete (maybe 10-15 minutes) have each student tell their partners educational background to the class (30-40 seconds each).
