Adverbs provide information about verbs or adjetives.
They describe how, when and where an action is performed, how intense a quality is, etc.:
You live well. ("well" describes the verb "to live")
    It's too easy.
    ("too" describes the adjective "easy")
Doesn't work here anymore. (where and when works)
These are more difficult. (how "difficult")

Adverbs can also describe other adverbs:
    He speaks very slowly.
    ("very" describes the adverb "slowly")

Uso y formación / Use and Formation

    • Los adverbios no tienen forma plural ni género. Normalmente están lo más cerca posible del verbo, y antes del adjetivo o de otro adverbio:
Me gustan mucho las fiestas. ("mucho" describe a "gustar")
Siempre quieren más postre. ("siempre" describe a "querer")
Somos bastante interesantes. ("bastante" describe a "interesantes")

    • Adverbs have no plural forms or gender. They are usually placed as close to the verb as possible, and right before the adjective or another adverb:
I like parties a lot. ("a lot" describes the verb "to like")
They always want more dessert. ("always" describes "to want")
We are pretty interesting. ("pretty" describes "interesting")
Time goes by very quickly. ("very" describes the adverb "quickly")

► BUT some adverbs are also adjectives. If functioning as adjectives, they must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe:
Those birds fly fast. (the adverb "fast" describes "to fly")
Those birds are fast. (the adjective "fast" describes the noun "birds")
Many quantifiers function as adverbs or adjectives:
They work too much because they have a lof of debt(s).
(in this case, "too much" are adverbs, "a lot of" is an adjective phrase)
They work a lot because they have too much debt.
(in this case, "a lot" is adverbial, "too much" is an adjective phrase)

    • To form an adverb from an adjective add -mente to the feminine form of an adjective:
lento → lentamente (slowly) - fácil → fácilmente (easily)

When used in a series, only the last adjective will add -mente:
Trabaja rápida y eficazmente. (works quickly and efficiently)

To avoid cacophony, adjectives ending in -nte rarely add -mente.
Spanish prefers some adverbial phrase in those cases:
    interestingly → de manera interesante
frequently, elegantly → con frecuencia, con elegancia

    • Los adjetivos bueno y malo tienen sus propios adverbios correspondientes:
bueno bien (well) malo mal (badly)
    Cantas bien, pero bailas mal.

    • The adjectives bueno and malo have their own corresponding adverbial forms:
bueno bien (well) malo mal (badly)
You sing well, but you dance badly.

Aquí, ahí, allá / Here and there

    aqui-alla.jpg

De manera similar a los demostrativos (este, ese, aquel), hay tres grupos de adverbios de lugar que sirven para indicar tres espacios en relación con su distancia relativa respecto a la persona que habla:
    1) en su espacio (aquí, acá),
    2) en otro espacio próximo (ahí),
    3) en otro espacio alejado (allí, allá).

Just like demonstratives (este, ese, aquel), Spanish has three groups of adverbs to indicate three different spaces according to their relative distance from the speaker:
    1) within the speaker's space (here
    );
    2) in a different, nearby space (there
    );
    3) in a different, remote space (over there
    ).

    • Algunos ejemplos:
Hola, estoy aquí en Lima. ¿Cómo está el clima allá en París?
Acá (donde estamos) está el comedor y ahí al lado está la cocina.
La moneda en Ecuador era el sucre. Ahora usan el dólar allí.
    • Here are some examples:
Hi, I'm here in Lima. How's the weather over there in Paris?
The dining room is here (where we are), and there, next to it, is the kitchen.
Ecuador's currency used to be Sucre. Now they used dollars over there.
    • Hay algunas variaciones o preferencias regionales, pero, en general,
    aquí y acá son sinónimos
allí y allá son sinónimos (aunque allá se percibe más remoto)
    • There are some regional variations or preferences but, in general,
    aquí and acá are synonyms
allí and allá are synonyms (but allá is often perceived as more remote)
ahí sirve para referirse al espacio de la persona con quien se habla:
¿Qué es eso que tienes ahí?
ahí is used to make reference to the space of the person being addressed:
What is that you have there?
    • Las expresiones por aquí, por ahí, por allá... indican dirección o ubicación relativamente vagas:
Creo que por aquí hay un restaurante japonés.
    - ¿En qué dirección salió el ladrón? - Se fue por allá.
    - No encuentro mis llaves. - Busca bien, deben estar por ahí.
The expressions por aquí, por ahí, por allá... indicate direction or a relatively vague location:
I think there's a Japanese restaurant around here.
    - Which direction did the thief took? - He left that way (in that direction).
    - I can't find my keys. -Look carefully, they must be somewhere around there.

Hi, I'm here in Perú and this photo shows who I am with right now. I can't believe all the wonders I'm seeing here! The llama you see there climbed up from the valley, down over there by the river, and then it started grazing quietly there near me. The mountains you see over there in the back are, of course, the Andes. The stairs you see there behind me are part of the Inca architecture. My trip has been spectacular. All people here is very kind and I have felt at home. How are you doing over there in beautiful Tijuana? I miss you, but I don't want to go back too soon. Everything is so interesting here in the Andean world!
