Para formar el gerundio regular, se cambia la forma del infinitivo: | ||
-ar → -ando: terminar → terminando |
-er, -ir → -iendo comer → comiendo ; vivir → viviendo |
|
Los verbos en -ir con alteración vocálica cambian la raíz en el gerundio: o → u: dormir → durmiendo • morir → muriendo e → i: pedir → pidiendo • sentir → sintiendo |
||
Los verbos en -er/-ir cuya raíz termina en vocal, añaden -yendo: traer → trayendo • creer → creyendo • ir → yendo oír → oyendo • destruir → destruyendo |
El gerundio (-ndo) es una forma verbal que funciona como adverbio (para expresar un proceso en desarrollo): Como adverbio y como forma impersonal del verbo, es invariable: El gerundio también funciona como parte del verbo para expresar acciones en progreso, precedido del verbo estar: |
The -ing form of a verb in Spanish (called gerundio) functions as an adverb to express a developing process: As an adverb and as an impersonal verb form, it is invariable: -ing forms are also used as part of the verb phrase to express actions in progress (continuous tenses in English), mostly with estar: |
Usos del gerundio
El gerundio se usa: |
The -ndo forms (gerund, present participle in English) are used: |
1. Con el verbo estar para expresar acciones en progreso: Este tipo de construcción no se usa para expresar futuro (como en inglés). El presente simple sirve para indicar un futuro que se considera un hecho: Salgo la próxima semana. |
1. With estar to express actions in progress (continuous tenses in English): Note that in Spanish this construction cannot be used to express the future, as it frequently is in English (I am leaving next week). The simple present can be used in this sense: Salgo la próxima semana. |
2. Con los verbos seguir y continuar para indicar la continuación de una acción: Después de los verbos seguir y continuar no se emplea el infinitivo (-ar, -er, -ir), solamente el gerundio (continuó diciendo, siguió diciendo). |
2. With seguir or continuar to mean "go on doing something": Note that English also allows the infinitive in these cases (he went on to say), while Spanish only admits the -ndo form (continuó diciendo). |
3. Para expresar una acción simultánea a la descrita por el verbo conjugado, o indicar la manera de hacer algo (pero nunca después de preposición): |
3. To express a simultaneous action with the verb (while doing something), or to indicate how to (by doing something, but with no preposition): |
♦ El gerundio, a diferencia del inglés: • No es adjetivo. Para describir algo o a alguien, se emplean adjetivos o cláusulas adjetivas: • No es sustantivo. Después de artículo, después de preposición, como sujeto o como objeto del verbo, se emplean derivados de verbos o infinitivos: |
♦ English uses -ing forms in many cases in which -ndo forms are not used: • As an adjective to describe something or someone (use adjectives or adjective clauses): • As a noun. After an article, after prepositions, or as a subject or object of a verb, use terms derived form the verb or use the infinitive: |
Concepto y usos del infinitivo
El infinitivo (-ar, -er, -ir) es la forma básica de los verbos (como aparecen en el diccionario). También funciona como sustantivo (nombra una acción o proceso): |
The infinitive (-ar, -er, -ir) is the basic form of a verb (as found in the dictionary). In Spanish it functions as a noun (to name an action or process): |
• Como sustantivo, el infinitivo se usa: 1. Como sujeto de una oración: 2. Como objeto directo del verbo*: 3. Después de preposiciones: |
• Spanish uses the infinitive in cases in which English uses -ing forms: 1. As the subject of a sentence: 2. As the direct object of a verb*: 3. Immediately after any preposition (English prefers -ing forms): |
• Como verbo, el infinitivo puede tener sujeto y objeto: |
• As a verb, the infinitive can have a subject and object: |
Dos estructuras con el infinitivo
Dos estructuras útiles que emplean el infinitivo: 1. Al + infinitivo sirve para coordinar dos acciones que se realizan u ocurren al mismo tiempo: 2. Acabar de + infinitivo sirve para indicar que una acción es muy reciente: |
Two useful idiomatic constructions involving the infinitive: 1. Al + infinitive indicates two actions occurring at the same time, as English at, on, in, upon doing: 2. Acabar de + infinitive is used to express "having just done something": |
