This will mean introducing your topics as well as the basis for your comparison and your criteria. Be sure you write an outline before you begin your paper so that you know what your criteria are and can "see" the point you plan to make in your body paragraphs. You could also write your body paragraphs first and then write your introduction: using this writing process will mean you understand the comparison thoroughly as you write the introduction and can more effectively set this information up as a result.

Using the phrases above as well will help you as you introduce the comparison and criteria, and one or two of these words or phrases could be instrumental in conveying your thesis clearly.
Writing a comparison and contrast thesis can be difficult because the student writer should try to be specific while avoiding a simple list of criteria as a thesis. A comparison and contrast thesis should unify the points in the body paragraphs and move beyond stating "there are similarities and differences." For this reason, it can be helpful to wait until you are done with your body paragraphs to tackle your thesis. Having a clear idea of the significance of your body paragraphs will help in the construction of your thesis.
Exercise 13.4
Look through the Comparison and Contrast thesis statements below. Consider which thesis statements qualify as "strong" based on the information above. If a thesis is not strong, what should the student do to revise it?
- While adults' and teenagers' ages might be quite close in some cases, they have a different standing legally, and this leads to many differences between the groups in everyday life.
- There are more similarities between amphibians and reptiles than most people realize, but the differences are what make this comparison interesting.
- Psychopaths and sociopaths both lack empathy and are calculating, but one difference sets them apart: psychopaths are born while sociopaths are made.
