Provide examples for each of your causes or effects in order to convince your reader that your discussion is accurate and relevant. Use detailed examples to “prove” your causes and logical connections to link them together.
Try to use an organizing structure to help lead your reader from point to point. For example, a chronological structure might help your audience understand what led to what: weakened banking regulations in the 80s and 90s and lenient credit markets led to increased availability of home loans, which led to more and more banks issuing more and more loans, which led to a boom in the home construction market, which led to the need for more financing, which led to riskier loans, which led to the bundling and packaging of those loans by banks, which led to predatory lending (unqualified applicants and deceptive policies), which led to tens of thousands of defaults on home loans, which led to the bursting of the housing bubble, which led to the ’08 recession. Keep in mind the goal is to help your audience understand how the causes and effects are connected, to connect the dots. So, then, make sure that your structure serves that goal and at the same time serves your paper’s subject.
