The definition essay is a rhetorical mode that uses various techniques to provide the reader with the meaning of a term, an idea, or an elusive concept that is not easily or readily captured with a simple sentence or phrase. For example, we have all hear the term “critical thinking” so often that it no longer means the same thing to very many of us. We all have a simple idea of what the Declaration of Independence stands for, but what, exactly does it mean to you? How would you define it and what does it mean to you in an extended definition? The definition essay often employs the rhetorical strategies we have been discussing in many of the previous forms: comparison and contrast, division and classification, cause and effect, exemplification, and even a bit of narration depicting a personal anecdote or two, is useful!
