Sometimes an instructor, a department, or a college will require students to follow specific instructions on titles, margins, page numbers, or the location of the writer’s name. These requirements may be more detailed and rigid for research projects and term papers, which often observe the American Psychological Association (APA) or Modern Language Association (MLA) style guides, especially when citations of sources are included. To ensure the format is correct and follows any specific instructions, make a final check before you submit an assignment. To double check that your paper is in MLA, use this checklist:
- ___Include 1" margins on all sides.
- ___Use a readable font in 12pt. Times New Roman and Courier are generally accepted.
- ___ Double space the paper, including the header and Works Cited page (if included). You should also omit extra spaces between paragraphs. If this is a formatting issue in your document, you can remove extra spaces by going to your spacing menu and checking the box that reads, "Do not add spaces between paragraphs."
- ___ Include a double-spaced MLA header. An MLA header should not be included in the actual “header” of the document but just in the first few lines of the document. If it is in the header section of the document and incorrect, it will be on every page of the paper. Include the following information in the header in this order: Your name, the instructor's name, the class (EG 101), and the date in European format (18 Oct 2022).
- ___Include a centered title directly below the header information. An effective title is both topic specific and creative.
- ___Include your last name and a page number in the header of an MLA paper if required by your teacher. To achieve this, first go to "Insert" and insert a page number in the upper righthand corner of the paper. Then, click in the header and type your last name next to the page number, so that your last name and a correct page number occurs on each page.
- ___Indent the beginning of each new paragraph. You want to be sure that each new paragraph is indented by .5 inch so that your paper is clearly visually organized.
