    Using Canvas

    Why should I use Canvas?

Canvas houses information on individual courses. At minimum, you should be able to access the courses syllabus and your grades for a face-to-face course in Canvas, but some teachers will also post assignments and extra course resources in Canvas. Further, you can contact teachers through the Canvas “Inbox” and sign up for text alerts regarding your grades and course communications. Online courses are housed entirely in Canvas, including all assignments and learning resources.

Before logging in, have your student ID and password ready.

If you don't know this information or need help logging, contact the helpdesk. Contact the Help Desk during college business hours (8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday) by phone at 316.322.3306 (733.3306 from the Wichita area) or by email at helpdesk@butlercc.edu.

    1) To log into Canvas, navigate to the Butler homepage at www.butlercc.edu. From the Butler homepage, click “Canvas” at the top of the screen.

    2) Enter your Username and password on the screen when prompted. Be sure to include @butlercc.edu at the end of your username for login.

    3) Once you have logged into Canvas, click "Courses" to navigate to one of your classes to view course syllabi and grades, and click "Inbox" to send a message.

    Capture4.PNG

    4) Once you are in a course, look to the left side of the screen for navigation options. Select “Syllabus” for information on the course, click “Grades” for your course grades and to enter “what-if” grades, and select “Modules” for course work. “Modules” is generally the best way to navigate Canvas, whether in a face-to-face or online course.

See this brief online course from Butler Online for more information on Canvas and the many functions of the learning management system.

    Using the Canvas App

If you have a smart phone, downloading the free Canvas Student app is essential to help you stay on top of communication and homework at Butler. 1) Search your app store for “Canvas Student App.”

    2) After you have downloaded the app, you will need to put in “Butler Community College” as your school.

    3) You will then be prompted to login as explained on the previous page. Once logged on, your Canvas dashboard with all your classes will then appear. When you click on a course, the syllabus, modules, assignments, etc. for it will appear.

    Setting Canvas Notifications

Setting up your notifications in Canvas ensures that you are notified immediately when a teacher messages you through Canvas or grades an assignment. Getting immediate notifications can help you stay on top of your classes and communicate with teachers. Follow the steps below to manage your notifications within Canvas.

    1) In the far left Canvas navigation pane, click “account.” (If you have a profile picture, this will be where your profile picture is, but if you have no profile picture, it will just be a shadow as shown below.)

    Capture1.PNG

    2) Click “Settings” and then make sure that your Butler email account is set in Canvas. You may add another email account under +Email Address.

    Capture6.PNG

    3) Click “Account” again and then “Notifications.”

    Capture7.PNG

    4) Look through the Notification Settings. Set the following as “immediate” notifications (click the bell icon) in the email column (1st column) for:

    • Submission comments— This notifies you of professor comments on assignments. These are very important to read immediately if a professor directs you to revise an assignment or has other timely directions and comments. You don't want to miss that.
    • Conversation Messages (Canvas email) — This notifies you of an email in your Canvas inbox. Remember it is important to check your email for communication from professors.
    • Announcements— These are class announcements that show at the top of your Canvas Dashboard or in the class itself. Often important reminders for the whole class to be aware of.
    • Grading--This lets you know when grades have been posted for assignments.
    • Discussion— New Topic and New Reply— This lets you know when a new Discussion Board has been created and when comments have been added to a discussion board in class.

Setting Canvas Phone Notification (in the app)

Once you have installed the free Canvas Student app on your smart phone, set up the Notifications on it also. To do this, go to Settings, then to “Push Notifications,” then toggle the switch to “immediate.”

    Using MyButlerCC

    Why should I use MyButlerCC?

MyButlerCC has a big picture of your career and classes at Butler. From MyButlerCC, you can drop a course, access your financial aid information, view your final grades, and access many services helpful to students. You can also download the free MyButler app to your smartphone via the Google Play & Apple App stores.

    1) To log into MyButlerCC, navigate to the Butler homepage at www.butlercc.edu. From the Butler homepage, click “MyButlerCC” at the top of the screen.

    2) Enter your Username and password on the screen when prompted. Do NOT include "@butlercc.edu" at the end of your username. Your password is the same password you use for Canvas.

    3) Now, you should see MyButlerCC. From the homepage, you will see many tiles, color-coded for different resource types for Butler students. Click on the tile for Office 365 to easily access it.

    Using Student Email

Why should I use Student Email?

Outlook email is part of the free Office 365 suite. It is important to check your Butler Outlook email because college offices such as Financial Aid and Advising use this to communicate with you. (Your professors prefer that you use Canvas to communicate with them, however.) You do not want to miss out on email regarding these important aspects of making your college funds, enrollment, etc. run smoothly. You should check both your Outlook and Canvas email daily. Here are steps to opening and using Outlook:

    1) To log into your Outlook email, navigate to the Butler homepage at www.butlercc.edu. From the Butler homepage, click “Email Login” at the top of the screen. (You may also choose to click on “MyButlerCC” at the top of the screen and then choose the Office 365 tile.)

    2) If you are not currently signed into Office 365, you will be prompted to enter your username followed by “@butlercc.edu” on the next login screen. From there, you will be redirected to Butler’s login screen, and you will need to enter your username followed by “@butlercc.edu” one more time as well as your password. (Your password for your email is the same as your password for Canvas.)

    3) For security reasons, you may also be required by the Authenticator software, which Butler uses to validate your sign in using a one-time password code or other option. If so, follow the prompts for this.

    4) Once logged into Office 365, click the "Outlook" icon to view your inbox. To reply to any message, click the arrow and type your reply, then send. To type a new email message, click "New Message."
