Una de las celebraciones más importantes para el pueblo de Sumpango, en el departamento de Sacatepéquez, es el 1 de noviembre, el Día de Todos los Santos, cuando se celebra junto al cementerio el festival de Barriletes Gigantes. Cada barrilete es elaborado por muchos meses y participa en un concurso de creatividad. Y los participantes vuelan (fly) sus barriletes en el campo de fútbol de la comunidad.
El día de esta festividad, la gente se reúne en los cementerios con los barriletes gigantes para comunicarse con sus parientes y amigos que ya han muerto (have died). En los barriletes hay mensajes especiales para los muertos.
La tradición de los barriletes gigantes es una mezcla de arte, tradición y color, a través de los cuales, los habitantes de Sumpango transmiten mensajes de unidad, amor, fe y respeto por sus muertos y también por la Madre Tierra.
El diseño de cada barrilete es diferente y representa visualmente el mensaje que la gente quiere dar. Las cometas (otra palabra para barrilete) tienen además distintas dimensiones, y entre los más grandes, están los que van de los 5,5 metros a los 16 metros de extensión. |
