Some aspects of college will be challenging. However, if you try to handle every challenge alone, you may become frustrated and overwhelmed.  Colleges have resources in place to help students, so be sure to take advantage of these!  As you move on to other institutions of higher learning in the future, too, be sure to be informed of the services that are available to you and use them.  Here are some of the key student resources at Butler Community College:

    Tutoring

Did you know the most successful students are often the ones who take advantage of tutoring services? One reason is that they are not afraid to show that they have questions and need support. You can be one of these students by taking advantage of Butler’s free tutoring services, provided in our Learning Labs and online.

Butler provides free tutoring in several forms, for a wide range of subjects:

    • Face-to-face tutoring at the El Dorado and Andover campuses

    • Online tutoring

You can find information and schedules for these at this link:

    https://www.butlercc.edu/tutoring

    • The Online Writing Lab (OWL), which is staffed by Butler English professors, is available to give you feedback and guidance on your writing for all classes, not just English. You can easily navigate to it by clicking on “Online Writing Lab” in the left-hand menu of any of your courses.

    Advising

Advisors are professionals who guide you in your major (which are also called pathways), transfer, and course choices, to help you prepare for and navigate enrollment. Also, as they are interested in your success in college, they are good people to talk to if you are experiencing difficulties with courses and/or navigating college.  Find information about Butler’s Advising Centers at this link:  https://www.butlercc.edu/advising

    Career Service Center

The Butler Career Service Center helps students with connections for employment during and after college.  For more information, go to this link:

    https://www.butlercc.edu/student-experience/student-services/career-services

    Butler Library

Butler’s libraries serve faculty and students and the community alike, providing all the resources you need for instruction, study and research in an environment that facilitates learning.   Of course, librarians are the best resource for information about the library, so if you need help with anything from the use of our databases to writing research papers, just ask! For more information, go to the library website:

    https://www.butlercc.edu/academics/libraries-archives

    Financial Aid Office

Often, students don’t take advantage of the money that is available for them to help pay for college, just because they don’t know about it.  Don’t let this be you! Applying for financial aid involves completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and applying for scholarships by the deadlines for the upcoming semester or academic year.

Most students do not know that much about how to apply for financial aid and find scholarships that they may be eligible for, so if you feel this way, you are not alone!   Be sure to meet with a Butler Financial Aid professional who can help you navigate these processes. Find this information at this link:  https://www.butlercc.edu/financial-aid

    Counseling Services

Everyone needs support from others.  Often, we need the help of a professional to help us through a difficult time.   Butler provides free, confidential counseling to Butler students by licensed counselors. Your well-being is important.   Here is a link for more information about how to reach Butler’s counseling services: https://www.butlercc.edu/studenthttps://www.butlercc.edu/student-experience/student-services/health-counselingexperience/student-services/health-counseling

You can also contact the Butler CARE Team about concerns with yourself or another student at the same link above.

    Disability Services

Making Butler Community College accessible to anyone with a disability is the mission of the Butler Office of Disability Services.  Here is a link to their website:

    College Health Offices

Health professionals are at Butler’s El Dorado and Andover campuses. They provide many services for Butler students, so be sure to make yourself aware of what is available for you.  Use this link to find out more information:  https://www.butlercc.edu/student-experience/studenthttps://www.butlercc.edu/student-experience/student-services/health-counselingservices/health-counseling

    Exercise 2.9: Exploring College Resources

Identify at least one college resource at Butler that you think could be helpful to you and you would like to investigate further. Plan a time to visit this resource within the next week or two so you can use it throughout the semester. Then, reflect in writing by answering these questions:   What key services does this resource provide?  How could I use this resource?

What are the steps I would need to take to use this resource when I need it?
