At Butler, we are deeply committed to your academic success. Part of that commitment is to provide tutors who can help to enrich and enhance your understanding of subjects that may be particularly challenging for you. This service is free to any currently enrolled student.
Online tutoring sessions are available for free from the Peer Tutoring Lab. To see when tutors are available to meet in-person or online, see TutorTrac through the Butler website. ou can also meet with a tutor in-person on either the Andover (located in the 5000 Building, Student Union Room 5200) or El Dorado labs (located in the 1500 Building, Room 15-124).
The Butler tutor locations vary by semester and day of the week, so please see the full schedule of their offerings for the semester at the Butler website. Please be sure to bring your student I.D. when you meet with your tutor.
The Online Writing Lab (Online Only)
At the OWL, English teachers from around Butler give students suggestions on how to better their writing and also compile lessons and information to help students construct better essays for all of their courses-- not just English! Please see the presentation above for basic ideas on how the OWL works and how to submit.
The Butler OWL currently offers two services to students: help revising papers turned in through an OWL dropbox and instruction in paper writing and revision. The OWL returns papers with comments in about 48 hours (excepting weekends and holidays).

Enrolling in the Online Writing Lab
1) Login to Canvas.
2) Enter a course so that you can view the course menu. Once you can see the course menu, click "Online Writing Lab". If you do not see "Online Writing Lab" in your course's menu, click "Butler Resources" in the course menu, and then "Online Writing Lab" will appear in the menu to the left of your screen.
3) Canvas will prompt you to enroll in the course. Please note that this is a free course and is not graded. Once you are enrolled, you are under no obligation to turn papers into the OWL or use the resource, but we certainly hope you do!
4) Click the "Enroll in Course" button to enroll.
5) After, Canvas will prompt you to proceed to the Online Writing Lab. Click “Go To Course” to enter the course and begin exploring resources or submit a paper for feedback.
Submitting to the Online Writing Lab
Papers are accepted 7 days a week, but the OWL has 5 due dates per week: Monday through Friday at 12:00pm (noon). Papers are returned within 48 hours of the due date, excepting weekends and days classes are not in session. Please note the OWL may only review one paper per student per week (Mon. to Fri.) and can only review each paper once.
To submit to the OWL
1. Be sure to save your paper as a .docx or a PDF and include your name, your teacher's name, and the course name in the document. It can be difficult to upload your paper from a cloud service (Google Docs or Office365). Instead of uploading from the cloud, download a copy of your paper and upload that file to Canvas to avoid technical issues.
2. Once you are enrolled in the course, be sure you are logged into Canvas and navigate to the OWL course by selecting "Online Writing Lab" from the "Courses" drop down menu.
3. In the OWL course, click on "Modules" to the left of the screen.
4. In Modules, look through the assignment pages under the "Submit Papers Here" header. You will be able to see due dates and comment return dates for each assignment page. Click on the assignment page with the comment date that works best for you.
5. On the assignment page, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the rocket icon that says "Drag a file here" beneath it. You can either click on the icon and upload a paper from your computer or drag and drop your file to the rocket icon.
6. After your file has been uploaded, hit "Submit" at the bottom of your screen. When your paper is successfully uploaded, you will see a green circle with the word "submitted" next to it.
7. As long as you see the image under Step #6, your paper was uploaded successfully, and you met the requirements from Step #1, you will receive feedback on the paper by the due date.
