Instructor Guide: How to Use This Textbook

This textbook is intended to replace the current often cost-prohibitive textbooks in required community college literature classes; specifically, ENGL 110: Argumentative Writing and Critical Thinking Through Literature. Thus, the authors of this textbook have attempted to include all materials necessary to meet the needs of such a classroom, including an anthology encompassing texts from each major literary genre, literary criticism, a writing guide, and a dictionary of literary terms. A straight read-through of the textbook, we hope, will give students a strong introduction and foundation in reading and writing about literary texts. That being said, in order to meet the many diverse needs of instructors, and in an attempt to include different types of readings, there is much more material within this book than can feasibly be read in a single semester. Thus, instructors are encouraged to choose which texts best suit their classroom needs.

2. Writing About Literature is a writing guide specifically tailored to the study of literature. It includes skill-based resources as well as Student Sample Essays.
3. Citations and Formatting For Literature (MLA) is meant to help students ethically cite sources.
4. The Glossary of Literary Devices provides key terms relevant to the analysis of literature

Cool Features

• Hypothesis. When using this textbook on the Libretexts website on your phone or computer, you can annotate directly onto the textbook by using the little sticky note on the upper righthand corner of your screen. This takes you to a free app called Hypothesis that records your notes!
• Beeline. This feature helps those with adaptive needs like Dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia. You can enable this feature by clicking the "Readability" tab at the top of this page and selecting a preferred reader from the dropdown menu.
• PDF. You can turn any part of this textbook into a PDF that you can read on the go, even if you do not have internet.
