    Word Patterns

    The letters a, e, i, o, and u are vowels. Vowels can make a short sound or a long sound.

    The short /o/ makes the /o/ sound like in octopus.

    The long /o/ makes the /ō/ sound like in no.

    The long /o/ sound can be spelled with the letters oa, ow, and o_e.
