    Deep reading

    On the next few pages of PLUMA, you’ll find stories about immigrants and their children. You’re not expected to understand everything nor be able to replicate native speaker Spanish yourself, but you do need the exposure and there is a way for you to identify and practice the same content and skills in your own words.

    Summarizing

    Students get a deeper understanding of material when they are able to summarize what they have read or heard in their own words.

    What are summaries?

    Summaries are short (2-3 phrases or sentences), and they capture enough information to give someone who hasn’t read the text a good idea of what it’s about.

    How to summarize

    While you read, deepen your understanding of the skills covered in this PLUMA by summarizing the stories in your own words in Spanish.

    1. First, read each story carefully.
    2. Identify who the main character is, like their name, age, origen, location, timeframe.
    3. Identify what the general topic or purpose of the story is: condense/categorize only the important information that would help someone who hasn’t read it understand what it is about.
    4. Write a short summary with this information in your own words in Spanish.

    Practice summarizing with a partner

    Another effective way to help you get a deeper understanding of a story is to elicit basic information about the main idea or purpose of the story by asking a partner some who, what, where, and when questions in Spanish.
