Es el 10 de septiembre mil novecientos cincuenta y siete. Pablo ya es un adulto y tiene veinte años. España está todavía recuperándose de la depresión de los años después de la guerra civil y es todavía una dictadura bajo Francisco Franco.
Pablo estudia ingeniería en la universidad en Madrid y está muy contento allí. Tiene un grupo de amigos muy simpáticos que son mayores que él. De lunes a viernes tiene que asistir a clases, leer muchos libros, escribir ensayos y hablar con profesores. A veces necesita colaborar con los compañeros de clase, pero normalmente pasa mucho tiempo en la biblioteca. Los fines de semana, le gusta tomarse unas copas con sus amigos o caminar por el parque del retiro con su novia.
Cuando tiene tiempo libre, a Pablo le gusta escuchar la música de Elvis Presley. Escucha sus canciones para aprender inglés porque quiere estudiar y vivir en los Estados Unidos. Su plan es que va a estudiar mucho inglés porque necesita tomar un examen para recibir una beca “fulbright” para ir a la universidad en los Estados Unidos.
