    The preterite versus the imperfect is another one of the great battles in the Spanish language. In this lesson, we will work on these together, to further solidify your understand of each tense. Keep in mind the role that time plays when deciding which tense is appropriate for a given situation.

    El pretérito is used to discuss:

    · one-time occurrencesor events

    · interrupting actions

    · actions that happened at a specific moment in time

    · actions that occurred during a specific time period that is now over

    El pretérito is commonly used with time expressions such as:

    Ayer:

    El/la ________ pasad@:

    Anoche:

    Hace (“x” time):

    Anteayer:

    Por/ durante (“x” time):

    De repente:

    El imperfecto is used to discuss:

    · recurring or habitual actions in the past (“used to” or “would ________”)

    · ongoing actions in the past (“was __ing”).

    · descriptions of people, feelings, or situations.

    (setting the scene)

    · time, age, and weather in the past.

    El imperfecto is commonly used with time expressions such as:
