Cultivo una rosa blanca
por (by) José Martí
Cultivo una rosa blanca
en junio como enero
para el amigo sincero
que me da su mano franca.
Y para el cruel que me arranca
el corazón con que vivo,
cardo ni ortiga cultivo;
cultivo la rosa blanca.

[hidden-answer a=”174289″]
- The first word is a verb: “cultivar”. Who is it conjugated for?
- Which word in the first sentence is an adjective?
- If the flower were “el narciso” (daffodil), how would you modify the adjective?
- In the third line, “para” means for. For whom is the poet growing a white rose?
- In the fourth line, “que” means “who.” “Da” is from the verb “dar,” to give. Who is “da” conjugated for?
- What did the friend give the poet?
- “El cruel” is a cruel person. What did this cruel person tear out (arrancar)?
- “Cardo ni ortiga” means “neither thistle nor nettle.” So the poet isn’t growing thistle or nettle “para el cruel” (for the cruel one). What is the poet growing?
