Coil is a pedagogical practice where two faculty from different parts of the world connect their courses and give their students assignments to complete in collaboration. Students and faculty who participate in COIL acquire intercultural competence by understanding cultural practices firsthand in an interactive negotiation of meaning. Students also enhance their communicative and linguistic skills across cultures though activities that make them step out of their classroom lecture environment, virtually, using various kinds of technology.
