Cuando Pablo se mudó a los Estados Unidos, extrañaba mucho España, entonces siempre incorporaba elementos de las tradiciones de España en las celebraciones de los Estados Unidos. Cuando tenía veintisiete años y estaba recién casado, él y su nueva esposa Sara planearon su primera cena del día de acción de gracias (Thanksgiving). Decidieron preparar una pierna de cordero en vez de pavo porque era una comida común durante las celebraciones donde él vivía en España. Pablo cocinó la pierna de cordero y Sara preparó las comidas típicas del día de gracias: puré de papas, maíz, ejotes (“judías verdes” en España), relleno y salsa de arándanos. Como Pablo era un estudiante internacional, conocía a muchos otros estudiantes internacionales. Pablo invitó a su antiguo compañero de cuarto (el chileno), a un amigo de Costa Rica y a un amigo de México. Sara invitó a unas compañeras de trabajo y a una amiga de la universidad. Los amigos internacionales también trajeron comida típica de sus países para compartir. El chileno trajo empanadas de carne, el costarricense trajo plátanos fritos y frijoles negros y el mexicano trajo tamales verdes de pollo. Las amigas de Sara trajeron vino y dos tartas, una de calabaza y otra de manzana. Durante la fiesta, todos hablaron y se rieron mucho y les encantó la variedad de comida. Fue una experiencia memorable para todos.
