Es el 31 de octubre de mil novecientos setenta y tres. Pablo es un hombre casado de treinta y seis años y tiene dos hijas. Vive en Lawrence Kansas con su esposa, Sara, y es profesor de sociología en una universidad en Kansas. Sara, a quien Pablo conoció en Indiana en la universidad, tiene treinta y dos años y es de los Estados Unidos, de California. Sara es alta, rubia, inteligente y muy cómica.
Le gusta leer, coser, tomar fotos, pasar tiempo con sus hijas y sus amigos y estudiar antropología. Las hijas de Pablo se llaman Teresa (Tere) y Gabriela (Gabi). Tere tiene ocho años y Gabi tiene seis.
Todos los días las niñas caminan juntas a la escuela y después tienen que limpiar sus cuartos, poner la mesa para la cena, y lavar los platos después de la cena. Nunca tienen mucha tarea y no pueden ver la televisión porque sus padres no lo permiten. Tere es muy artística y activa y en su tiempo libre prefiere dibujar caballos y jugar afuera con otros niños. Gabi es muy social y activa y le gusta seguir a su hermana, subirse a los árboles, andar en bicicleta, correr y hablar mucho. Dice su madre que Gabi habla incesantemente.
