ENTRANDO EN EL TEMA
Tanto la identidad individual como la identidad colectiva a veces dependen de la localidad geográfica y la cultura a la que pertenecemos. Muchas veces podemos identificar la cultura de otras personas por medio de las costumbres que observan. En algunos países andinos, por ejemplo, comen conejillos de indias. En Chile como en Perú se consume el pisco, una bebida alcohólica elaborada del mosto de la uva. En México se observa del Día de los Muertos de forma única. En España se observa el solsticio de verano con fogatas, la Semana Santa con procesiones, las fiestas militares con desfiles fastuosos. Estas costumbres para unos son curiosas, para otros son fascinantes, y para los más religiosos, espirituales.
Las costumbres raras para una persona hispana
Primer paso. Haz una lista de las costumbres más raras de Estados Unidos que menciona el video. Después clasifica las costumbres que te gustan y aquellas que menos te gustan. (1 = me gusta muchísimo, 5 = no me gusta nada).

Segundo paso. Compara y contrasta tus opiniones con las opiniones de tus compañeros.
¿Tienen listas semejantes? ¿Cuáles son las costumbres que las personas de tu grupo festejan con frecuencia? ¿Y las que nunca observan? ¿Hay alguna fiesta que les gustaría eliminar o agregar?
Tercer Paso. Si has visitado algún país hispanohablante o si conoces personas de otros países latinos, ¿qué costumbres observaste? ¿Qué costumbres te sorprendieron? Si no has visitado ningún país del mundo hispano, ¿conoces alguna costumbre a través de películas, contacto con personas, las redes sociales?
Discusión. Muchos de los eventos importantes de la vida se festejan con una ceremonia o ritual, o con una reunión familiar. Recuerda algún cumpleaños especial, tu graduación de la escuela secundaria, una despedida de un amigo. Piensa en todos los detalles. (comida, bebida, decoraciones, música, brindis) ¿Qué cosas no pueden faltar en una fiesta? ¿Hay algunos eventos que no se celebran que en tu opinión deben celebrarse? ¿Por qué?
PARA LUCIRTE. Discute con un grupo de estudiantes de la clase ¿Por qué posiblemente son estas costumbres raras para personas que viven fuera de los Estados Unidos? ¿Qué revela la percepción que tiene Marilyn, la presentadora argentina del video en Primer paso de la previa página, sobre su propia (own) cultura?
