Voy a dormir.

    • Just as English expresses intentions, plans and evident future occurrences with "be + going to...", Spanish uses the verb ir in the Present plus the preposition a followed by the infinitive:
There are no clouds. It is not going to rain soon.
My friend is pregnant. She's going to have a baby.
We are going to travel to Montevideo in October.
What are you going to do this weekend? I am going to sleep.

No había ninguna nube. No iba a llover pronto.

Iba a dormir.

    • To indicate past intentions and projections, use the imperfect of ir (similar to English "was/were going to..."):
There were no clouds. It was not going to rain soon.
My friend was pregnant. She was going to have a baby.
We were going to travel to Montevideo in October., but we couldn't
What were you going to do last weekend? I was going to sleep.
