Para describir sensaciones, el español emplea numerosas expresiones con el verbo tener + sustantivo.

Estos son ejemplos de las más comunes:

To describe sensations, Spanish uses many expressions combining the verb tener with a noun. English uses "to be" in many of these cases.

Here are examples for the most common ones:

¿Cuántos años tienes? Tengo veinte años.
    Ella tiene mucho frío.
    ¿Tienen ustedes sed?
    La gente tiene hambre.
    Tengo un poco de calor.
    Tenemos sueño.
Muchos niños tienen miedo de los fantasmas.
    No tengo mucha suerte.
    Tienes razón.
    ¡Ten cuidado!
Tengo que viajar a otro país.
    Tengo muchas cosas que hacer.

How old are you? I am twenty.
    She is very cold.
    Are you thirsty?
    People are hungry.
I am a little warm (hot).
    We are sleepy.
Many children are afraid of ghosts.
    I am not very lucky.
    You are right.
    Be careful!
I have to travel to another country.
I have a lot of things to do.

Ya que en muchas de estas expresiones el objeto es un sustantivo (hambre, sueño, frío, etc.), se emplean adjetivos para indicar su intensidad:
    Tenemos mucho sueño.
    Tengo demasiada hambre.

Since the literal meaning of these phrases is "I have hunger", etc., Spanish uses adjectives where English needs adverbs such as "very" or "too":
    We are very sleepy.
    I am too hungry.
