Points To Remember
- uno is used for the number one and the indefinite article a. When using uno as a number in front of a noun, follow the same rules as for the indefinite article.
un uomo uno studente one man one student
un’automobile una figlia one automobile one daughter
- Numbers ending with –uno (21, 31, 41, etc.) may drop the -o in front of a plural noun.
Ha ventun anni She is twenty-one years old
- In numbers over 999 a period is used instead of a comma.
1.000 (mille) = 1,000 (one thousand)
- Use a comma instead of a decimal point to separate whole numbers from decimals.
0,5 (zero virgola cinque) = 0.5 9,95 (nove e novantacinque) = 9.95
- Mille vs. –mila: the word mille (one thousand) becomes –mila in the plural. Remember: do NOT use un to translate one hundred, or one thousand.
mille (two thousand) duemila (two thousand) tremila (three thousand) diecimila (ten thousand) cinquantamila (fifty thousand)
- Write numbers as one word, except when they include milione or miliardo.
1.300 → milletrecento (one thousand three hundred; thirteen hundred) 500.555 → cinquecentomilacinquecentocinquantacinque
- Milione (plural milioni) and miliardo (plural miliardi) are followed by di when they are used before a noun.
Questa villa costa 2 milioni di euro? This villa costs 2 million euros?
- To express approximate quantities, you can use a collective number followed by di + noun. Most collective numbers are formed by dropping the final letter of the and adding –ina.
venti → una ventina (about twenty) trenta → una trentina (about thirty)
Exceptions: un centinaio (plural centinaia) = about a hundred (hundreds); un migliaio (pl. migliaia) = about a thousand (thousands).
C’erano centinaia di persone al concerto. There were hundreds of people at the concert.
- The definite article il is used before a calendar year.
Il 1968 è un anno importante per il movimento giovanile. 1968 is an important year for the youth movement.
