The Upper Middle Rhine Valley (Oberes Mittelrheintal) stretches 65 kilometers of the Rhine river from Bingen to Koblenz. Its numerous castles, historic small towns, and extensive terraced vineyards illustrate the importance of the Rhine river as a major transport artery, leading to the prosperity of the region. The region is steeped in history and legend, and has been a powerful influence on writers, artists, and composers.
