UNESCO-Welterbe. The UNESCO selects areas or landmarks that are culturally, historically, scientifically or otherwise significant and declares them world heritage sites. These sites are protected by international treaties. There are 46 World Heritage Sites in Germany (43 cultural and 3 natural).

Today, you will learn something about the “Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe”.

The monumental water displays of the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe were begun by Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel in 1689. A giant statue of Hercules dominates the hill. Reservoirs and channels behind the Hercules Monument supply water to a complex system of hydro-pneumatic devices that supply the site’s large Baroque water theatre, grotto, fountains and 350-metre long Grand Cascade. Beyond this, channels and waterways feed a series of dramatic waterfalls and wild rapids, culminating in the geyser-like Grand Fountain which leaps 50m high.
