Following are the twelve months in the calendar year (im Jahr):

To express that something takes place in a particular month, put the preposition im before the name of the month:
| Aschenputtel hat im Januar Geburtstag. | Cinderella's birthday is in January. |
| Die sieben Zwerge haben im Oktober, Dezember (zwei Zwerge), Februar, März, April und im Juli Geburtstag. | The seven dwarves have birthdays in October, December (two dwarves), February, March, April and in July. |
| Die böse Königin feiert ihren Geburtstag nicht mehr, weil sie so alt ist. Sie ist sehr eitel. | The evil queen doesn't celebrate her birthday anymore because she is so old. She is very vain. |
Dates and festivals
| Im Februar feiert man Karneval, besonders in Köln und Düsseldorf; in Mainz nennt man den Karneval Fasching! |
| Im März oder im April feiert man Ostern. |
| Am ersten Sonntag im Mai feiert man Muttertag und am 1. Mai den Tag der Arbeit. |
| Ende Juni gibt es Examen an der Uni und das Wintersemester ist vorbei. |
| Am 4. Juli feiert man in Amerika den Unabhängigkeitstag. |
| Ende September gibt es das große Oktoberfest in München. |
| Am 3. Oktober feiert man in Deutschland den Tag der deutschen Einheit. |
| Im November ist die Berliner Mauer gefallen (aber man feiert es lieber im Oktober!) |
| Im Dezember gibt es überall Weihnachtsmärkte. |
| Am 6. Dezember feiert man den Nikolaustag, Weihnachten am 24., 25. und 26. und Silvester am 31. Dezember. |
The preposition 'am'
To say when in a month something happens, you will need to use the ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) and the preposition am. (Please note that in writing, you put a period after the number to indicate the date.)
| Aschenputtel hat am 1. (am ersten) Januar Geburstag. | Cinderella's birthday is on the first of January. |
| Pimpel hat am 14. Februar (am vierzehnten) Geburtstag. Er ist sehr aufgeregt, dass heutzutage auch Deutsche Valentinstag feiern. Er meint, jetzt feiern Millionen seinen Geburtstag! | Bashful's birthday is on the 14th of February. He is very excited that Germans are starting to celebrate Valentine's day! He thinks that millions now celebrate his birthday! |

To express that something happens during a particular season, you need to use the preposition im:
| Viele Schlossbewohner fahren im Winter nach Bayern, wo sie gerne Ski fahren. | In the winter many castle residents travel to Bavaria, where they like to go skiing. |
| Im Frühjahr geht Rotkäppchen in den Wald und pflückt Blumen. Das ärgert ihre Mutter, weil es sehr schlecht für die Umwelt ist! | In the spring Little Red Riding Hood goes into the forest and picks flowers. This makes her mom angry – it's very environmentally unfriendly! |
| Die Brüder Wolf reisen im Sommer nach England und nach Lappland, wo sie ihre Vettern und andere Verwandte besuchen. | The wolf brothers travel to England and Lappland during the summer, and visit their cousins and other relatives. |
