Ob mit der Familie, mit Verwandten oder mit Freunden, Feiertage machen viel Spaß ... Welche Feiertage feiern Sie? Welche feiert man in den deutschsprachigen Ländern? Das finden Sie im nächsten Teil des Kapitels heraus.

    Aktivität 13. Die Deutschen feiern

Watch Berna’s, Eva’s and Jan’s videos „Mein Lieblingsfeiertag”, and find out what their favorite holiday is, and how they celebrated it the last time. Before you watch the clips, read the vocabulary in the bubble. While you watch the videos, identify who says which expression. Who thinks Christmas is a good opportunity for bringing a family together? And who is a 70s music fan?

Fasching • Weihnachten • aufwache • Efeu (ivory) • eine gute Gelegenheit meinen Geburtstag • kochen • zusammen • gefeiert • nichts Besonderes in die Stadt gehen • einladen • ein Paper präsentieren • Eis essen verkleidet (dressed as) • Geschenke • ganz viel Musik aus den 70er & 80er Jahren

Aktivität 14. Die amerikanischen Studenten feiern

Watch the video clips „Mein Lieblingsfeiertag” of the American students, and match up who says what about their favorite holidays. Write the students’ name – Adan, Andrew, Erin and Sara – next to the statements that describes their favorite holiday. More than one student’s name might match each statement!

Wann feiert man ...?

You want to plan ahead and therefore need to match up the following German holidays and celebrations with the correct date in 2020. Then complete the sentence about each of them. You can double check most of the dates at http://www.feiertage.net/uebersicht.php or google them to find out.

    A. Im Jahre 2020 feiern wir ...

    Screen Shot 2021-08-10 at 8.26.55 AM.png

    B. Feiertage im Frühling ...

Which holidays are celebrated in which season in your home country or by your family? Sort the German and American holidays into the correct season/month. Discuss the different holidays you all might celebrate. Are there variations among you and your classmates or do you all celebrate the same holidays, at the same time and in the same way? What might the results suggest about cultural practices?

in den deutschsprachigen Ländern in Ihrem Land

Man feiert folgende Feiertage im Frühling:

    im März

    im April

    im Mai

Man feiert folgende Feiertage im Sommer:

    im Juni

    im Juli

    im August

Man feiert folgende Feiertage im Herbst:

    im September

    im Oktober

    im November

Man feiert folgende Feiertage im Winter:

    im Dezember

    im Januar

    im Februar

Zum Nachdenken: What do the holidays listed in Aktivität 14A tell you about the Germanspeaking countries? Specifically, about the connection between church and state? Did you know that there is – to this day – a church tax in Germany? All Catholic, Protestant and Jewish residents of Germany pay about 9% of their income along with their income tax to support a church. They have to renounce their religious affiliation and sever relations with the church they were raised in if they wish to go through the lengthy legal procedure of getting out of paying the church tax. For further information, see: http://www.steuer-forum-kirche.de/

    Aktivität 16. Ein kleines Interview

Ask a classmate about special holidays he/she celebrates. Take notes, and be prepared to present your peer to the rest of the class.

    A. Das Interview

Gibt es vielleicht einen Grund dafür (is there perhaps a reason for that)?

    B. Ein kurzer Bericht

Write a short report about what holidays your partner celebrates, how, what his/her favorite holiday is and why. What holidays does his/her family not celebrate? Do you celebrate the same holidays?

    Aktivität 17. Was feiern wir?

There are several greeting cards below. Read each of them, and decide what occasion it was sent for (birthday, wedding, New Years Eve invitation, Christmas, etc.), who sent it and who the addressee is. Take notes on important, useful and fun expressions that are used, especially on what to wish and how to say it!

What do you think is the significance of the Marienkäfer (the ladybug) on this card? Check your answer against a few different sources on the Internet. Is there a similar symbol in your own culture?

Aktivität 18. Grußkarte schreiben: Jetzt sind Sie dran!

Go to http://www.sheepworld.de, http://www.gruesse.de or http://www. bewegte-grusskarten.de and write a greeting card to your instructor, another student or to a friend (in German, of course ☺). Make sure you include the important information you outlined in the previous exercise (date, greeting, body of text, including the event-appropriate wishes and a closing line, etc.).

    Aktivität 19. Ihre Lieblingsfeiertage

What are your ”Top 3 Holidays”? Why are they your favorties and why are they particularly important to you? Why do you like them so much? When and how do you celebrate them?

    A.

    B.

    C.

Aktivität 20. Feiertag: ein Gedicht zum Feiern

    A. Feiertag

Which words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) do you associate with the term Feiertag? Write down as many words that begin with the different letters found in Feiertag as you can think of. Work together with other students for improved creativity. Have a poetry reading at the end. You get extra points if you can make anything rhyme!

    Screen Shot 2021-08-10 at 12.47.51 PM.png

    B. Was ist Ihr Lieblingsfeiertag?

Write a second poem, this time dedicated to your favorite holiday. Describe it with two adjectives, three verbs, a phrase or expression, and close your poem with a synonym or another word that you closely associate with this holiday. This is called a cinquain poem.
