Das Schwarze Brett is a campus bulletin board found at every German university. There are advertisements for rooms or apartments, bikes, musical instruments, clubs, dance partners, anything that you can think of. While on university campuses these Bretter are still pieces of paper tacked on in a myriad of layers, in today’s electronic age, there is – of course – an online Schwarzes Brett. And it’s a great way to find something you’re looking for (i.e., housing, jobs) or even to meet people if you are planning to go study in Germany (and need a bike, a room, a roommate, etc.).

Go online to the Schwarzes Brett at the University of Ulm to answer the following questions: https://portal.uni-ulm.de/

    Schwarzes Brett

    A.   Rubriken.

There are a number of possible categories listed under "Rubriken". Most of the categories have a "biete" and "suche" option. Look at a couple of ads in each and decide which one means "looking for" and which one means "for sale."

    B.   Kategorien.

Scan the list of categories; can you identify what to buy or sell under each heading?

    C.   Auf der Suche nach….

Now it’s time to explore! Click on a category of your choice. Read 3 Anzeigen (ads) that look interesting to you and fill in the table below.

      Anzeige 1 Anzeige 2 Anzeige 3
Is this ad from someone offering a service or looking for one?   Schwarzes Brett
What is the service that is being offered or sought? Schwarzes Brett
What is the contact information of the person who posted this ad? Schwarzes Brett
What other information is provided that seems particularly useful? Schwarzes Brett
What are 2-3 useful phrases in this ad? Schwarzes Brett

    D. Antworten.

Of the 3 Anzeigen you just read, pick one to respond to. In the space provided below, write a response in which you either
    1) express an interest in what the person has to offer or
    2) offer the service the person seeks. Use as many of the useful phrases as you can from the ads you read. Make sure you include all the information that is typically provided in advertisements!
