In this section, you will learn the difference between the active and passive voices
On étudie !
The forme passive (passive form) — or voix passive (passive voice) — emphasizes the result of the action and gives importance to the one who undergoes the action.
Only verbs admitting a direct object can take the passive form. It is constructed with the auxiliary être + the past participle. Therefore, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject, like an adjective. The subject of the represented action by the past participle can be expressed by the preposition par:
| forme active | forme passive |
|---|---|
| Jeanne mange le gâteau. | Le gâteau est mangé par Jeanne. |
| forme active | forme passive |
|---|---|
| Jeanne a mangé le gâteau. | Le gâteau a été mangé par Jeanne. |
There is gender and number agreement with the past participle in the passive form, but not in the active form:
| forme active | forme passive |
|---|---|
| Luca suprend Valérie. | Valérie est surprise par Luca. |
| Elles interrompent les négociants. | Les négociants sont interrompus. |
| Luca a surpris Valérie. | Valérie a été surprise par Luca. |
| Ils ont applaudit les musiciens. | Les musiciens ont été applaudis. |
Here are some examples passive forms where the active forme is more or less implicit :
Les moments les plus difficiles pour nous sont passés. (The worst moments are past us.)
L’ambassadeur est attendu à l’aéroport à 18 heures. (The ambassador is expected at the airport at 6 o’clock.)
