Les nombres ordinaux (ordinal numbers) is a number that indicates position or order of something in relation to other numbers. For example : first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.

In most cases, to form an ordinal number you just add the suffix -ième to the cardinal number (e.g., deux + -ième = deuxième), with the exception of premier:

premier, deuxième, troisième, ...

As an adjective, first can be masculine (premier) or feminine (première).

There are a few other irregularities to remember:

Any number ending in -e will drop the -e when you add the -ième : quatrième
A -u- is added oto the -q in cinq: cinquième
With the number neuf, the f changes to a v : neuvième.
For numbers ending in s, you take away the s: quatre-vingts becomes quatre-vingtième ; trois cents becomes trois centième; etc.
