On étudie !
We have already learned about reflexive pronouns (where the subject and the object are the same person) and direct object pronouns (the object directly affected or acted upon by the verb).
An indirect object is a noun that indicates to whom or for whom an action is performed. In French it is always preceded by a preposition (usually à or pour). For example:
Je donne le ballon à Thierry. (I give the ball to Thierry.)
Je l’achète pour mes enfants. (I’m buying it for my children.)
Le prof explique le problème aux étudiants. (The professor explains the problem to the students.)
Elle donne des fleurs à sa copine. (She gives her girlfriend flowers.)
Remember these characteristics of indirect objects:
- They are connected to the verb with a preposition (usually à or pour).
- They cannot be removed without altering the meaning of the sentence.
- They tell you “to whom” or “for whom” something is done.
The indirect object can be found by asking "to whom?" or "for whom?":
To whom is he giving flowers? (To his friend.)
For whom am I buying it? (For my children.)
Les pronoms objets indirects
Indirect object pronouns. In order to avoid repeating nouns in a series of sentences or when answering questions, you replace indirect objects with indirect object pronouns. Compare:
(1) Je lis à mes enfants chaque soir. (I read to my kids every evening.)
(2) Je leur lis chaque soir. (I read to them every evening.)
Notice how leur in sentence (2) replaces à mes enfants in sentence (1), just like to them replaces to my kids in the English examples. Here are all the indirect object pronouns you need to know in French:
Pronoms d'objet indirect | Objets indirects avec pronoms toniques | Anglais |
---|---|---|
me, m' | à moi, pour moi | (to, for) me |
te, t' | à toi, pour toi | (to, for) you |
lui | à lui, pour lui | (to, for) him |
lui | à elle, pour elle | (to, for) her |
nous | à nous, pour nous | (to, for) us |
vous | à vous, pour vous | (to, for) you |
leur | à eux, pour eux | (to, for) them |
leur | à elles, pour elles | (to, for) them |
As you can see here, the disjunctive -- or stressed -- pronouns moi, toi, lui, leur preceded by à or pour are also used to specify who or what the indirect object is.
- There’s no distinction between "to him" and "to her" in French; use lui for both. If you need to make a distinction, you can add à lui or à elle: Je lui ai donné le livre, à elle.
- The first and second plural indirect object pronouns nous and vous are identical to the first and second person direct object pronouns nous and vous.
Le placement des pronoms d’objet indirect
Placement of indirect object pronouns. In French, the indirect object pronoun always replaces the preposition (à or pour).
Elle achète une chemise pour moi. ➔ Elle m'achète une chemise. (pour moi.)
Ils donnent leur voiture à nous. ➔ Il nous donne leur voiture. (à nous.)
Just like reflexive pronouns and direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns are placed (1) right before conjugated verbs or (2) between a conjugated verb and an infinitive.
Elle me parle. Elle va me parler. Elle m’achète une chemise. (She is talking to me. She is going to take to me. She buys me a shirt.)
Elle m'a parlé en espagnol. Elle veut me parler en espagnol. (She spoke to me in Spanish. She wants to speak to me in Spanish.)
Notice how in English, the indirect object follows the verb.
Attention ! Don't get used to translating from English all the time. Just because you see "for him" in the sentence I am looking for him, it does not mean that it is an indirect object. In this case, "him" is the direct object of the verb to look for. That's why in French we would use the direct object pronoun with the verb chercher:
Je le cherche. I am looking for him.
v. d.o.
Here are some common verbs that require indirect objects :
Français | Anglais |
---|---|
donner à | to give to |
prêter à | to lend to |
écrire à | to write to |
dire à | to say to, to tell |
parler (à) | to talk, speak to |
offrir à | to offer to |
acheter (pour) | to buy for |
