    La langue vivante

    Linguistic diversity in France

The French-speaking world is home to thousands of other languages. For example, in the Ivory Coast, they speak 77 languages in addition to French. In countries like Switzerland, Belgium, Mauritania and Gabon French is only one of several official languages. In other places, French creoles have emerged over time, like Haitian Creole or Martinican Creole. With its post-colonial connection to so many cultures and other international relationships from tourism to international business, France itself is host to virtually all the languages of the world.

Within the borders of modern France there are many native languages that have been there as long as French, and some even longer. Regional languages like Occitan, Wallon, Francoprovençal, Catalan, Basque, Breton, Alsacien and Corsu all have deep histories in France. Many of these languages cross international borders as well, like Catalan and Basque which are also spoken in Spain.
