    To identify someone, use Qui-est ce ? (Who is it?).

    To reply, use C'est... Ce sont... (It's...).

    — Qui est-ce ? (Who is it?)
    — C'est moi. (It's me.)

     

    — Qui est-ce ? (Who is it?)
    — C'est Valérie. (It's Valérie.)
    — Ce n'est pas Jacqueline. (It's not Jacqueline.)

    To identify something, use Qu'est-ce que c'est ? (What is it?).

    To reply, use C'est... Ce sont... (It's...).

    — Qu'est-ce que c'est ? (What is it?)
    — C'est un crayon. (It's a pencil.)

    To ask a yes, no question, use Est-ce que c'est... ?

    To reply, use Oui,... Non, ... (Yes, no,...).

    — Est-ce que c'est un stylo ? (Is it a pen?)
    — Oui ! C'est un stylo. (Yes, it's a pen.)

    — Est-ce que c'est une table ? (Is that a table?)
    — Non, ce n'est pas une table. (No, it's not a table.)

    — Est-ce que ce sont des stylos ? (Are those pens?)
    — Oui ! Ce sont des stylos. (Yes, they are pens.)

    — Est-ce que ce sont des tables ? (Are they tables?)
    — Non, ce ne sont pas des tables. (No, they are not tables.)

    Note

    Qu' is the contracted form of Que (What): Que + est = Qu'est... The word que cannot stand alone. If you want to say What, and nothing more, you just say quoi.

    Langue vivante : Ça

    In very informal situations you may hear someone say : C'est qui ça ? or Ça c'est qui ?

    — C'est qui ça ? (Who is that?)
    — C'est mon ami. (It's my friend.)

    — Ça c'est qui ? (Who is that?)
    — Ça c'est ma grand-mère. (That's my grandmother.)

    Adding the word ça (that) can help indicate which thing or person you are talking about (like pointing):

    — C'est qui ça ? (Who's that [there]?)
    — Ça c'est Robert. (That's Robert.)

    Qu'est-ce que c'est ça ? (What is that?)

    — Et ça ? Qu'est-ce que c'est ? (And that? What is it?)

    Other variations include: C'est quoi ça ? or Ça c'est quoi ?

    — C'est quoi ça ? (What's that?)

    — Ça c'est un nuage. (That, It's a cloud.)

    — Ça c'est quoi ? (What's that?)

    — C'est une bouteille. (It's a bottle.)
