    You can identify and describe people or things using the linking verb être (to be). It is one of the most frequently used verbs and we have already seen many examples of it above.

    Notice how the form of the verb être changes according to who or what the subject is. This subject-verb agreement is called conjugation (la conjugaison). You will learn a variety of verbs and conjugations throughout the course.

    Use ne...pas to make a sentence negative. Just place the verb in between them, like this:

    Je suis (v.) (I am). ==> Je ne suis (v.) pas  (I am not).

    — Est-ce que tu es professeur ?

    — Non, je ne suis pas professeur.

    Ne becomes n' if the verb begins with a vowel".

    Il est (v.) américain (He is American). ==> Il n'est (v.) pas américain. (He is not American).

    — Est-ce qu'il est américain ?

    — Non, il n'est pas américain. Il est français.

      6. Elles ________ belles.
    2. Use ne...pas and the verb être to fill in the blanks. Exemple: Les pandas sont noirs et blancs. Ils ne sont pas rouges.
      1. Les roses sont rouges. Elles ________ violettes.
      2. M. Martin est canadien. Il ________ français.
      3. Guillaume est très grand. Il ________ petit.
      4. Tu ________ blonde ! Tu es brune.
