    In French, you use the subjunctive with expressions of emotion (émotion)

    L’émotion

    When someone expresses their feelings or attitudes toward other people’s actions we have emotion.

    In this case, the action in the subordinate clause is in the subjunctive mode because the focus is more on the emotions & feelings expressed in the main clause.

    Elle est contente. (She is happy.) + Tu es là. (You are here.)  ➔ Elle est contente que tu sois là. (She is glad that you are here.)

    Elle est triste. (She is sad.) +  Tu t’en vas. (You’re leaving.) ➔ Elle est triste que tu t’en ailles. (She is sad that you are leaving.)

    Here are some common verbs and expressions of emotion:

    être heureux/heureuse que to be happy (that)
    être surpris(e) que to be surprised (that)
    être étonné(e) que to be shocked (that)
    être ravi(e) que to be delighted (that)
    c’est dommage que It’s too bad (that)
    avoir peur que to be afraid (that)
    être furieux/furieuse que to be furious (that)
    être triste que to be sad (that)
    regretter que to regret (that)
    être désolé(e) que to be sorry (that)
    être deçu(e) que to be disappointed (that)
    c'est, il est… bon que, juste que, naturel que, normal que it’s… good that, right that, natural that, normal (that)

    Je suis désolé qu’il ne vienne pas avec nous. (I am sorry that he is not coming with us.)

    Nous aimons que nos étudiants fassent preuve d'autonomie et d'initiative. (We like that our students show initiative and independence.)

    Les gens sont furieux que le gouvernement ne les ait pas avisés de ce qui se préparait. (People are furious that the government did not notify them of what was coming.)
