    Les verbes voir et croire

    The verbs voir and croire are conjugated in the same way:

    Conjugaison du verbe voir (to see)
    Singulier Pluriel
    je vois nous voyons
    tu vois vous voyez
    il, elle, on voit ils, elles voient

     

    Voir au passé
    Participe passé Racine de l'imparfait
    J'ai vu Je voyais

    Conjugaison du verbe croire (to believe)
    Singulier Pluriel
    je crois nous croyons
    tu crois vous croyez
    il, elle, on croit ils, elles croient

     

    Croire au passé
    Participe passé Racine de l'imparfait
    Tu as cru Je croyais

    Exemples :

    Je vois un film. (I see a movie.)

    Il ne me voit pas. (He doesn’t see me.)

    Nous voyions la télé souvent. (We used to watch TV often.)

    Je le crois. (I believe it.)

    Je ne crois pas mes oreilles ! (I can’t believe my ears.)

    Je ne l’ai jamais cru. (I never believed it.)

    (a) Croire à is means to believe in, when you are talking about whether you believe something is real, true or not:

    Il ne croit pas aux fées. (He doesn’t believe in fairies.)

    Elles croient au père Noël. (They believe in Santa Claus.)

    Je crois aux bonnes manières. (I believe in good manners.)

    One exception to this is croire en Dieu God).

    (b) To say that you believe in someone, as in to trust or have confidence in someone, you say croire en or avoir confiance en quelqu’un.

    Je crois en mon frère.

    J’ai confiance en mes amis.

    (c) Croire que means to believe that and voir que means to see that.

    Je crois qu’elle a tort. (I beleive that she is wrong.)

    Nous croyons que ces questions sont importantes. (We believe that these questions are important.)

    Je vois que tu as beaucoup travaillé. (I see that you have worked a lot.)

    Vous ne voyez pas que la serveuse est très occupée ? (Don’t you see that the waitress is very busy?)

    (d) Some common expressions with croire and voir:

    Tu crois ? (Do you think so?)

    Tu vois ? (You see?)

    Je crois que oui (non). (I think so. [I don’t think so].

    Les verbes comme recevoir

    concevoir to devise, to understand
    décevoir to disappoint, to deceive
    percevoir to perceive
    repercevoir to reperceive

    Les croyances d’autrefois. Complétez avec « croire » et « voir » à l’imparfait, puis dites si c’est « vrai » ou « faux ».
