Grammar Notes: Before you go on to Questions et réponses C, review the LQL interrogative pronoun construction (Reference Grammar, 1.6.2, and Chapitre 16) and also do the Workbook exercises on the demonstrative pronoun.
C. Which (one) of these X do you want /...this one.
- —Laquelle de ces bières veux-tu?
- —Donne-moi celle-là.
- —Lequel des élèves avez-vous puni?
- —J'ai puni celui-ci, mais pas sévèrement.
- —Lesquels des joueurs est-ce qu'on a choisis?
- —On a choisi ceux-là.
D. Which ... ? / ... the one of X. OR ... the one that Y.
- —Laquelle de ces jupes préfères-tu?
- —Moi, je préfère celle de Françoise.
- —Quant à moi, je préfère celle que porte Fifi.
- —Lequel de ces chevaux vas-tu choisir?
- —Je vais choisir celui de Philippe.
- —Je vais choisir celui qui galope le plus vite.
- —Lesquelles de ces étudiantes ont réussi à l'examen?
- —Celles du professeur Ricard.
- —... et celles qui ont étudié, bien sûr!
Exercice III
As in Exercice II, make up five question-answer pairs, this time using LQL in the question, and the demonstrative pronoun in the response. Remember, the demonstrative pronoun must always be "completed," either by -cil-là, or by a de construction or a relative clause. Take some time to ask questions about things you are interested in. As usual, your instructor may have you ask the question of another student rather than simply read out your question and answer. Preparing answers, of course, will help you be generally prepared to answer other questions.
Exercice IV
Mixed verb function review. Write in the proper form of the verb given in parentheses. Pay careful attention to the meaning of the entire sentence/dialogue in order to choose the correct form (tense, mood, person-number). Add a complementary infinitive particle (preposition) if necessary.
- (manger) Nous__________une pomme par jour. C'est bon pour la santé.
- (mettre) Où sont mes clés? je ne sais pas, mais je suis sûr que vous les__________sur la table de nuit.
- (faire) Quand il était au lycée, Marc__________ses devoirs tous les jours.
- (prendre) Veux-tu__________ce train-ci ou celui-là?
- (avoir) Il est temps que nous__________une réponse du doyen.
- (boire) Quand nous étions en Allemagne, je ne__________que de la bière.
- (plaire) —Tu as aimé ce film?
—Oui, ça m'__________. - (commencer) —A-t-il fini ce roman?
—J'espère bien: il__________le lire il y a trois semaines! - (construire) On__________ce pont au XVIIe siècle.
- (mettre) Il faut que les dentistes__________des gants chirurgieaux ces jours-ci, à cause du SIDA.
